In Nepal, Chamsur is what mothers are
given after childbirth. It is what is
added to warming winter dishes when
the body needs strength. It is what
grandmothers have reached for across
generations when someone in the family
needed nourishing from the inside out.
These small reddish seeds carry a
weight of tradition and a density of
nutrition that is extraordinary for
something so tiny.
Chamsur — garden cress seeds — are
one of the most nutritionally concentrated
foods in the Himalayan pantry. Rich in
iron, protein, fibre, and essential
fatty acids, they have been used in
Ayurvedic and traditional Nepali
medicine for centuries as a galacto-
gogue for nursing mothers, a warming
tonic in winter, and a general
nutritional supplement for growing
children and recovering adults.
The seeds have a mild, slightly peppery
flavour when eaten raw, and a warm,
nutty depth when cooked. In Nepal they
are typically roasted and added to
ladoos — sweet energy balls made with
ghee, jaggery, and flour — that are
given to new mothers for the first
forty days after birth. They are also
added to soups, porridges, and warm
drinks, or simply soaked and consumed
as a nutritional supplement.
Internationally, garden cress seeds
are rapidly gaining recognition in
the wellness and superfood community
for their extraordinary iron content
— particularly relevant for vegans,
vegetarians, and women with iron
deficiency. RDK Organic House sources
its Chamsur from Himalayan growers
and packs it fresh in small batches
in Kathmandu.
Soak overnight and add to smoothies,
yogurt, and porridge. Roast and grind
into ladoos and energy balls with ghee
and jaggery. Add to soups and warming
winter broths. Consume by the spoonful
with warm milk and honey as a
traditional tonic.
