When the heat of summer arrives, there
is a remedy that Nepali and South Asian
households have reached for across
generations — not a medicine, not a
supplement, but a simple natural gum
that dissolves in water overnight and
transforms into something extraordinary.
Gud Katira — tragacanth gum — is the
dried resin of the Astragalus plant,
harvested from wild shrubs growing in
the hills and highlands of the
Himalayas. In its dry form it appears
as small, translucent, pale golden
crystals — almost like rough gemstones.
Soak them in water overnight and
something remarkable happens: they
swell into a soft, cooling, almost
jelly-like mass that has been consumed
as a summer tonic in this part of the
world for centuries.
The traditional preparation is simple —
soak a teaspoon of Gud Katira in water
or milk overnight, then drink the
swollen gel the next morning with honey
or rose water. The cooling effect on
the body is immediate and profound.
In Ayurvedic tradition it is prescribed
for heat exhaustion, inflammation,
urinary tract health, and as a
strengthening tonic for nursing mothers
and those recovering from illness.
Beyond its wellness applications,
Gud Katira is also a natural thickening
and binding agent used in traditional
sweets, sherbets, and cooling drinks
across South Asia — a purely natural
alternative to synthetic food gums
and stabilisers.
RDK Organic House sources its Gud
Katira from wild Himalayan plants and
packs it in small batches in Kathmandu
without any processing or additives.
Soak one teaspoon overnight in a glass
of water or milk. In the morning,
consume the swollen gel with honey,
rose water, or fruit juice as a
cooling summer tonic. Add to sherbets,
cold drinks, and traditional sweets
as a natural thickener.
